The heavy-cruiser group is really a strike group

The nominal heavy-cruiser battlegroup mixes a cruiser, standoff missile ships, close escorts, surveillance, and maintenance vessels into a long-range attack formation.

Notes

The 34-ship formation combines one heavy cruiser, four missile-heavy standoff ships, sixteen group-defense frigates, nine surveillance ships, and four supply and maintenance vessels. Because threats can approach through three-dimensional space, the frigates must screen the formation as a surrounding shell rather than a flat line. The explicit logistics element matters because even self-repairing spacecraft need organized sustainment. The battlegroup label fits poorly because the formation's main striking power fires from range while the cruiser protects it from anything that closes. In functional terms it is a reconnaissance-supported strike group that still needs a separate close-combat formation.
