Permanent expeditionary commands before World War I

A standing expeditionary force gave Britain a designated commander and staff before a crisis required deployment.

Notes

The reformed British Expeditionary Force had an established organization and commander before World War I. That continuity replaced the habit of choosing whoever was available when a new operation arose. Staff officers could prepare the force's work in advance instead of assembling a command around the emergency. Imperial planning also embraced expeditionary forces from India and the self-governing Dominions, extending the value of a common staff beyond the British Army.
