Stakhanovism, hidden teamwork, and coercive production

Stakhanov's coal records became a model for other workers, while contemporary reporting questioned production claims and described alleged retaliation and coercion.

Notes

Stakhanov's celebrated coal records made him a propaganda model for higher industrial output, with fame and material rewards attached to exceptional production. A contemporary Time report quoted in Lloyd Clark's Kursk also questions the increasingly spectacular achievements publicized by the Soviet press. It recounts alleged violence against workers who raised output and a claim that an engineer deliberately sent fast workers into a dangerous pit. These accounts sit alongside show trials and the pressure to conform to state production demands.
