St George's visible layout places a 9.2-inch weapon forward with 6-inch guns both low in casemates and higher in the hull. The arrangement concentrated a heavy gun and multiple protected quick-firing weapons on a first-class protected cruiser. Shields covered the upper guns while six inches of armor protected the lower battery. The casemate armor appears to have risen high enough to cover guns above it as well as those mounted within it.
