SSBN(X), District of Columbia, and a reused naval name

The modern Columbia name links an SSBN replacement program to an attack submarine already in service and to an older commerce-raiding lineage.

Notes

The Ohio-class replacement was commonly described as the Columbia class even though USS Columbia, a Los Angeles-class attack submarine, remained active. The overlap illustrates the naming complications that appear when a large navy reuses familiar geographic names across generations. Naming the lead ballistic-missile boat District of Columbia distinguishes it from the attack submarine without abandoning the intended class identity. Attack submarines inherit part of the older cruiser's commerce-war role, while the new SSBN serves a different strategic mission.
