Why SS Baychimo is unlikely to remain afloat

Baychimo's reported 1969 sighting leaves a remote survival possibility, but moving Arctic ice would probably have destroyed the hull.

Question

Could SS Baychimo still be above water somewhere in the Arctic?

Short answer

It is theoretically possible but very unlikely, because decades of moving pack ice would probably crush, ground, or dismantle the hull.

Notes

Baychimo could theoretically survive frozen into an ice floe above water level, although this is judged extremely unlikely. Moving ice can push a hull onto rocks or squeeze it between floes until it breaks apart. A 1969 sighting is cited in which Inuit reportedly boarded the vessel while it was stuck in pack ice off Alaska. By the date of this conversation, an Alaskan search said to have begun in 2006 had not located her. The survival estimate remains pessimistic because of the destructive movement of the ice.
