Tracing 801 Squadron through Sturtivant's reference work

A squadron-history entry follows 801 Naval Air Squadron from interwar fighters through Norway, Malta, Tirpitz strikes, the Pacific, and Korea.

Notes

The entry follows 801 Naval Air Squadron from Flycatchers and Nimrods through Norway, Malta convoys, Tirpitz strikes, the British Pacific Fleet, and Korea. Its identity survived repeated disbandment, reformation, aircraft changes, and carrier transfers. Wartime strength could rise sharply, including large Seafire establishments after victory in Europe. Its recurring peacetime strength of twelve aircraft also explains why twelve remains a common squadron building block.
