The emergency was organisational as well as material because the Navy had to replace William Halsey while Yorktown was being rushed back into service. Raymond Spruance had commanded Halsey's escort and was judged capable of taking the carrier task force. Frank Jack Fletcher also went to sea with the available forces, leaving the Americans with a compact command arrangement for the ambush. The available forces needed a capable commander in time for the planned ambush.
