Spruance's size does not guarantee a modern missile magazine

An 8,000-ton Cold War destroyer can still fall short of the magazine depth expected from a modern escort.

Notes

Spruance had a substantial weapons fit for its period, when the US Navy also maintained many cruisers. That period-specific capability is judged insufficient for a modern destroyer because its magazine is too shallow. The limitation exists despite a full-load displacement of roughly 8,000 tons. Being only slightly lighter than a Type 45 demonstrates why hull size alone is an inadequate measure of useful missile capacity.
