Spruance roots and crowded air-warfare requirements

The Spruance-class baseline shows how a roomy general-purpose destroyer became a much tighter platform once cruiser-level air-warfare systems were added.

Notes

The Spruance class establishes what the Ticonderoga design inherited: gas-turbine machinery, good speed, general-purpose escort utility, and useful upgrade capacity. Many Spruances later received a 61-cell Mark 41 vertical-launch system, which demonstrates the baseline hull's available growth margin. Several VLS-equipped ships also gained a RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile launcher. An adaptable destroyer hull becomes far less adaptable when it is filled from the outset with cruiser-level sensors, command spaces, and weapons. The comparison explains why the common-hull approach was attractive and why later modernization became difficult.
