Spruance adds aviation and room for missile growth

Spruance's helicopters and varied missile fit show the flexibility expected from a mid-Cold War destroyer.

Notes

Spruance combined two helicopters with guns, close-in defences, ASROC, Sea Sparrow, Harpoon, and torpedo tubes. Later Mark 41 installations added Tomahawk strike capacity. This range of equipment made the class useful as both an escort and an offensive asset. Its spacious hull still operated in a fleet where cruisers retained the dominant command-and-control role. The comparison favors this combined mission fit over Soviet destroyers oriented more strongly toward either attack or defence.
