During a January 1943 patrol, Splendid landed Special Operations Executive personnel on Sardinia before moving to another patrol area. On 15 January she fired five torpedoes at Emma, which was carrying 950 tons of supplies and ten tanks. A single hit stopped the merchant ship without sinking her. Splendid remained nearby while the Italians failed to establish a tow, then attacked again in daylight the following morning and sank Emma with another torpedo. Remaining close kept the disabled transport under observation despite the usual incentive to withdraw and regain concealment after an attack. Splendid also continued to use her deck gun, sinking a minesweeper east of Sardinia.
