Why Britain and Japan abandoned splendid isolation

Britain and Japan find common cause against Russian expansion after the Boxer Rebellion exposes the limits of isolation in East Asia.

Notes

Britain was a global island empire, while Japan was an emerging island power seeking the strength its leaders believed the country should possess. Splendid isolation was failing both countries. Russia and France posed more immediate problems for Britain in 1900 than Germany, with Russian expansion toward China and India as the main concern. The Boxer Rebellion brought foreign armies into China and sharpened the contest over Russian influence. Russia's expansion may have outrun the logistics and military capacity needed to sustain it. Japan offered Britain a capable regional counterweight, with the Sea of Japan providing a defensive barrier. British shipyards and technical expertise were already helping to build the Japanese fleet, giving the relationship a practical naval foundation before the formal alliance.
