'Splendid isolation' is more a convenient label than an accurate description of British policy. Britain maintained extensive trade, an active Foreign Office, and numerous bilateral arrangements even when it avoided a continental alliance system. The formal Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 predates the Entente Cordiale and carried clearer obligations. Imperial and East Asian strategy therefore belongs inside any account of Britain's pre-1914 alignment.

Why splendid isolation obscures Britain's global diplomacy
Britain's trade, bilateral agreements, and earlier alliance with Japan challenge the idea that it escaped diplomatic commitments until the Entente Cordiale.
