Splendid's convoy salvo sinks an Italian destroyer

A six-torpedo attack on an Italian convoy missed its intended target but struck an escorting fleet destroyer twice, sinking the warship within seconds.

Notes

On 17 December 1942, Splendid fired six torpedoes into an Italian convoy. One passed just ahead of the intended target and another just astern, but two struck an escorting fleet destroyer. The destroyer sank in about ten seconds with 220 men dead. HMS Saracen observed the attack and independently confirmed the sinking. Splendid then fired her remaining working torpedo at another submarine and missed, continuing her unsuccessful attempts against submarines despite her results against other targets.
