Were the Splendid Cats armoured well enough against German battlecruiser guns?
Short answerThey proved capable of taking heavy damage and continuing to fight, but those survivals do not show that the protection was sufficient in every engagement.
NotesJutland alone is too narrow a test of whether the Splendid Cats were adequately protected. Tiger took substantial punishment there and at Dogger Bank yet remained in the fight. That record shows the design could survive serious battle damage rather than being uniformly fragile. It does not prove the armour was sufficient against every German shell or hit location, so the protection is best described as capable without turning survival in two actions into a universal verdict.
