Speed and workshops for independent carrier operations

Ark Royal's design supported concentrated attacks and independent operations. Speed let her remain somewhat apart from the main fleet and reduce exposure while still delivering a large air group. Size and onboard workshops increased self-sufficiency when the carrier was separated from the fleet train. British planners could therefore consider raiding operations alongside her place in a multi-carrier formation. The doctrine depended on maintenance spaces and machinery that could sustain the ship away from the main force.
