Specialized emphasis without theater lock-in

Royal Navy designs could emphasize one mission while retaining enough general capability to move between theaters and tasks.

Notes

The Royal Navy treated specialist emphasis and general usefulness as compatible design goals. The T class offered a faster way to establish an ambush than the service's minelaying submarines, because torpedoes could be brought into action without first creating a minefield. Mine gear was nevertheless considered, and one boat was fitted for it, showing that alternative methods remained under review. A British warship could be optimized around one mission yet remain employable in several theaters and tasks. That balance made the design adaptable without pretending that every capability carried equal weight.
