Specialist yards expanded coastal-craft production

Britain could build motor torpedo and gun boats in yacht and small-craft yards that were not competing to produce corvettes, frigates, or destroyers.

Notes

Many British motor torpedo boats and motor gun boats came from yacht yards and other firms outside the normal large-warship building base. Those yards were unlikely to construct corvettes, frigates, destroyers, or even anti-submarine trawlers. Coastal-craft orders therefore mobilized skills and capacity that might otherwise have remained outside naval production. The builders' methods also influenced the design features of the boats they produced. This industrial arrangement helped Britain answer E-boat numbers without diverting the yards needed for ocean escorts.
