Why reconstructing the fleet depends on specialist studies

Elisabeth van Houts's study of William's ship list is unusually important because most surviving evidence is scattered across brief specialist work.

Notes

Elisabeth van Houts's article on William the Conqueror's ship list is one of the most useful focused studies of the fleet. Much of the wider literature treats the ships only as a side issue within medieval political or military history. English Heritage and other historical resources add useful fragments, but they do not provide the dense operational record available for later navies. A careful reconstruction has to combine specialist scholarship, surviving lists, and technical analysis of ship types rather than rely on a single narrative source.
