The reconnaissance force the Pacific war did not develop

Makin demonstrated that raiding worked, yet the Marine Corps did not preserve the Raiders as a specialist reconnaissance and special-operations capability.

Notes

British commando units developed reconnaissance roles before major operations such as D-Day and Operation Torch. The Marine Raiders could have provided a similar capability as the Pacific war advanced. Marine institutional discomfort with a formation labelled elite prevented the force from receiving consistent support and specialist assignments. Defining the Raiders by their mission would have separated specialization from claims of superiority over ordinary Marines. Treating them like aviation, armor, or another distinct capability might also have kept them out of unsuitable conventional battalion work.
