Specialist officers and watchkeeping training

Science and medical qualifications can be supplemented by watchkeeping training, although professionally qualified entrants may receive only a short naval introduction.

Notes

An audience member expecting to serve as a science or medical officer suggests additional training as an officer of the watch and possible service as a divisional officer. That expectation receives agreement. Professionally qualified officers may instead receive a much shorter introductory course, jokingly compared with the course for a vicar. The distinction concerns how much naval preparation accompanies an officer's existing professional qualification.
