Sparrow Force and the thin defence of Timor

The small Dutch-Australian deployment to Timor was one of the lightly held Allied positions meant to obstruct Japan's advance across maritime Southeast Asia.

Notes

Sparrow Force comprised roughly 650 Dutch and Australian troops sent to Timor before the Japanese invasion. The detachment included a machine-gun troop but was far too small to defeat a major landing by itself. Allied planners scattered such limited forces across islands that sat astride maritime routes and air approaches. Sparrow Force's later resistance was notable because its strategic task exceeded the resources initially assigned to it.
