Chapter ยท 56:26-58:18

Spanish admiral titles and amphibious command

Spanish captain-general and admiral-general titles prompt a comparison between naval command and directing operations ashore.

Notes

The highest Spanish naval grades include captain-general of the navy and admiral-general. Their combination of naval and general-officer language can be read in the context of Spain's amphibious warfare tradition. Commanders in that tradition had to direct forces at sea and support operations ashore. Lower grades use admiral, vice-admiral and counter-admiral terms comparable to the French sequence.
