Were there famous Spanish pirate ships, crews, or privateers?
Short answerYes; Francisco Menendez and his connection with Fort Mose provide one example, alongside other Caribbean privateers.
NotesSpanish privateers sometimes appear in sources under the broad label guardacostas. Francisco Menendez escaped slavery, helped other enslaved people reach freedom in Spanish Florida, and commanded Fort Mose. Clarke describes Fort Mose as the first African settlement in North America. Two further examples are named, apparently Juan Garcia in the seventeenth century and Agustina Blanco in the Caribbean, though their names are uncertain in the captions.
