Spanish naval ranks preserve Reconquista language

Spanish junior officers remain linguistic knights of the navy, while senior grades reflect combined land-and-sea authority.

Notes

Alférez de navío carries an Arabic-influenced inheritance associated with a knight or cavalryman, preserving language from conquest and Reconquista Spain. Even the most junior officer grade therefore carries an older image of mounted or knightly status. Captain grades again follow corvette, frigate, and ship-of-the-line distinctions. Admiral general and captain general recall eras when commanders could exercise authority over both maritime and land forces.
