Why a Spanish brigada is a senior NCO

Spanish lower-deck ranks include titles that resemble much more senior posts in English, creating easy translation traps.

Notes

The hierarchy includes suboficial mayor, subteniente, brigada, sergeant, several corporal grades, and sailor grades. An English speaker asking for a brigadier can therefore be directed to a senior NCO rather than a one-star officer. NATO codes provide the safer comparison when familiar-looking words conceal very different status. The repeated cabo titles derive from the idea of the head of a body of troops, preserving the organizational origin of corporal.
