The 1810 map shows how different North American political geography looked during the Napoleonic Wars. Spain claimed more of the continent than the United States, and the mapped territory could make Mexico appear to border Canada. Spanish control north of the Rio Grande was weak, however. The distinction between a line on a map and effective occupation is the main learning point. Imperial maps record claims more readily than they measure state capacity.
