Foreign support and exhausted armies produce stalemate in Spain

Losing Italian support weakens the Nationalists, while Russian divisions cannot restore the exhausted Republican army's strength.

Notes

The Carlist counterattack begins after Italian support disappears from the Nationalist side. Without that help, the Nationalists are described as much smaller and unable to sustain their position. The wider war nevertheless settles into stalemate because most factions have lost outside support. The Republicans still have Russian divisions, but their own army is too exhausted for those reinforcements to compensate. The Carlist force is judged to be in the strongest condition with the most equipment. These assessments describe the balance inside this campaign.
