Period photographs and detailed lists give the book much of its value. Personnel postings and ship movements connect people and incidents that a campaign summary might leave isolated. Readers can follow individual careers and events while seeing how they fit within a wider naval picture. The book helps trace the institutional problems behind operations and place the best-known battles in context.
