Spain's empire brings strategic burdens as well as resources

Ottoman and Protestant wars, policies toward Morisco communities, reliance on American silver, and sovereign defaults strained Spain's ability to turn imperial wealth into an invasion fleet.

Notes

Philip II's Spain had extensive commitments rather than unlimited usable resources. It had to sustain conflict with the Ottoman world, the Dutch Revolt, and Protestant opponents in Germany while also managing domestic tensions. Pressure on Morisco communities and dependence on American silver created further economic fragility in this account. The crown's ability to default on loans and enforce its decisions shifted exceptional risk onto lenders. Imperial reach therefore did not translate automatically into ships, money, and schedules for the Armada.
