Which science-fiction doctrine is preferable: battleship-centered fleets or making every ship a carrier?
Short answerCarrier-like parasite craft are attractive, but the right doctrine depends on technology, communications delay, and how much autonomy can be trusted.
NotesThe preferred model gives most major ships some carrier function so expendable or smaller craft can separate combat from the logistics-heavy parent vessel. Even light-speed communication delay over interplanetary distances may require crews or autonomous decision-making close to the fight. That creates a trust problem: a system capable enough to act independently may be too capable to leave uncontrolled, while a deliberately limited system may not cope with combat. Superluminal sensors, communications, or weapons would change that decision loop again and could overturn the carrier analogy. The right doctrine therefore depends on the fictional setting's propulsion, sensors, communications, and weapons rather than on a universal naval model.
