Why a flak barrier works differently in space

Battlestar Galactica's flak screens prompt a look at how, without gravity, successive bursts could leave an incoming missile to cross multiple waves of fragments.

Notes

On Earth, gravity quickly removes the fragments from a flak field; in space, directional bursts could instead form a persistent barrier ahead of a ship. An attacker would have to pass through repeated fragment waves rather than a single interception point. Even if hull structure survived small impacts, exposed sensors and other delicate systems could be more vulnerable. The fictional image is appealing, although the different physics limit its use as a guide to naval combat at sea.
