Soviet saturation attacks and the logic behind Aegis

Coordinated Soviet missile salvos sought to exhaust a carrier group's defences, applying a saturation logic compared with torpedo attacks at Jutland.

Notes

Submarines, surface action groups, and strategic bombers could coordinate missile launches against a carrier group. Red Storm Rising provides a fictional illustration of that combined strike. A sufficiently dense attack aims to exhaust the defender's missiles and countermeasures so surviving weapons can reach the ships. Aegis was developed to resist that overwhelming scenario. The comparison with torpedo attacks at Jutland concerns the same calculation of probable losses from a massed salvo. Turning away preserved ships that a fleet might need later, even if it could afford to accept some damage in the immediate engagement.
