Soviet river forces could have land artillery batteries attached to support their operations. Increasing artillery mobility made that cooperation more practical. Self-propelled and towed guns ashore worked alongside monitors, gunboats and minesweepers. The Second World War examples anticipate later flotillas in which essential firepower need not all be carried aboard the river vessels.
