Soviet radars evolved by adapting proven technology for salt water

Head Net, Big Net, and Head Light illustrate a family of related electronics repeatedly modified for new search and fire-control jobs at sea.

Notes

Using NATO reporting names, Head Net technology on Kynda-class cruisers informed later Big Net, Head Light, and newer Head Net systems. These radars were distinct systems, with continuity in shared electronic processes and the reuse of proven engineering. Soviet development often began with land-based technology and then adapted it to a naval environment. Salt water, corrosion, spray, and ship motion made that work a substantial engineering problem. Electronics were protected and mounted high partly to reduce exposure to the sea. The related radar families show iterative design operating at the sensor level.
