Chapter · 36:41-42:06

Politics, purges, and the Soviet military inheritance

Soviet political selection and a recurring preference for leadership decapitation shaped Russian command culture and operational design.

Notes

Purges and political advancement favored officers who combined adequate military competence with political skill, influencing who reached senior command. One proposed connection links Soviet ideas about remaking human behavior to recurrent unrealistic expectations of soldiers and institutions. Russia's 2022 thrust toward Kyiv is used as a modern example of a historically familiar rapid decapitation plan whose failure forced a difficult change of operational mode. Repeated success with leadership-focused operations also made the approach predictable, and Ukraine appears to have positioned loyal, capable forces against it.
