The P-4, Packard engines, and a late Baltic attack

The Soviet P-4 combined a Vosper-like hull form with American Packard engines and finally saw action in the Baltic during the closing months of the war.

Notes

The P-4 closely resembled Vosper practice while also belonging to a Soviet development line. The type used American-supplied Packard petrol engines, twin heavy-machine-gun mounts, torpedo tubes, and depth charges; later versions gained radar. Delivered to the Baltic Fleet in 1944, P-4s scored hits on the German destroyer Z34 in April 1945 without sinking her. Postwar examples served around the Taiwan Strait, in Egypt with rocket launchers, and in Bangladesh, while Israel captured an Egyptian boat. This long international afterlife shows how a late-war Soviet small craft could remain useful through new operators, weapons, and regional conflicts.
