Chapter ยท 7:28-10:46

Potemkin turned bad food into a command crisis

Maggot-infested meat, a cursory medical inspection, and threats against sailors transformed a provisioning failure aboard Potemkin into mutiny.

Notes

The Potemkin episode began with a basic failure of naval administration: sailors were expected to eat food they believed was made from infested meat. A Social Democratic central committee within the Black Sea Fleet was already planning a coordinated mutiny, so the food crisis became a catalyst inside a wider breakdown rather than the sole origin of the unrest. The ship's surgeon had approved the provisions after, at best, a cursory inspection. Instead of correcting the supply failure, the executive officer threatened to shoot crewmen who refused the meal. That response destroyed any remaining confidence in the chain of command and helped trigger the killing of several officers. Logistics, medical responsibility, and leadership legitimacy all failed together aboard Potemkin.
