Chapter ยท 32:18-37:27

Cruisers as a bid for Soviet naval standing

Completing older cruisers offered the Soviet Union a more attainable way to restore regional maritime presence than pursuing battleships.

Notes

The Soviet Union completed cruisers that had been laid down under the tsarist regime, including Chervona Ukraina and Krasny Krym. These ships offered a realistic route back to naval strength when Lenin's and Stalin's capital-ship ambitions exceeded available money and industrial capacity. Their role sat uneasily between offensive and defensive purposes, especially while Soviet diplomacy officially promised friendship with nearby states such as Finland. Relatively modern cruisers still carried regional weight in the Baltic and Black Sea without an ocean-going battle fleet. The regime associated visible naval strength with acceptance and security instead of expecting goodwill alone to win international standing.
