G-5s fought less often than they transported

G-5s did sink a minelayer and minesweepers, but their more characteristic wartime work carried troops and high-value passengers in improvised transport service.

Notes

G-5s made relatively few torpedo attacks, although the class did sink a Finnish minelayer and some German minesweepers. Their more common wartime work carried troops, sometimes with soldiers crouched in the empty torpedo cradles before landing. The boats also moved high-value personnel as fast transports. No official gun upgrade followed this expansion of duties, leaving crews to improvise additions where they could. The whale-back deck sharply limited those modifications because water regularly swept across the available space. Operational demand turned a nominal torpedo boat into a transport and support craft without a matching formal redesign.
