Political clout could determine Soviet design credit

Soviet designations could follow the organisation with greater political influence rather than the technical lineage most visible in the finished boat.

Notes

Soviet small-craft names and designations can obscure who performed the technical work. Projects could combine several design teams, organisations, and factions, leaving a boat visibly rooted in one lineage while another group received the official designation. Political influence affected both the contract and the honour attached to it. A Soviet technical label may therefore record bureaucratic power as much as engineering ancestry.
