Soviet armored river gunboats

Soviet BK armored boats paired mass-produced tank turrets, machine guns, and sometimes Katyusha rockets with shallow river hulls for fire support on the Eastern Front.

Notes

Project 1124 and Project 1125 boats were purpose-built answers to Eastern Europe's dense river network. Early boats used available T-28 or T-35 turrets, later production adopted T-34 turrets, and some variants added Katyusha rocket launchers to extend their fire-support reach. Their shallow draft, armor, and concentrated weapons made river crossings dangerous until German aircraft and artillery could suppress them. Larger 1943 command boats and older gunboats or monitors with 130 mm weapons show that Soviet river forces formed a layered flotilla rather than a single tank-turret novelty.
