The Flower class inherited its seakeeping foundation from Southern Pride, a whale catcher built for harsh South Atlantic work rather than calm coastal water. William Reed lengthened the hull by about 45 feet, increased its speed, and expanded accommodation from a 30-person whaler crew toward an 85-person corvette complement. Decks had to be strengthened and ammunition routes reorganized before the naval weapons and magazines would fit. The result retained commercial-yard buildability while creating a platform stable enough for anti-submarine work in rough seas.
