One explanation is that Edward III used descent through his mother to claim France while excluding a female line from England. The commentary treats that inconsistency as possible, then asks whether it is sufficient. No one needed to alter Edward I's arrangement while Edward II's succession remained clear, but an incentive may have appeared when a later king needed to strengthen a disputed claim. The surviving records are therefore political evidence whose wording and preservation may reflect later interests as well as the original settlement.
