A communications specialist shaped by flagship service

Somerville's wireless and signals expertise brought him into flagship staffs and gave him experience alongside senior admirals.

Notes

Somerville trained in wireless telegraphy through the torpedo school and later served in the signal school. Communications was an unusual route to high rank in a promotion system that often favored gunnery and torpedo specialists. His expertise put him aboard flagships, whose picked crews, flag captains, larger staffs, and higher standards created a distinct working environment. His postings included HMS Marlborough, HMS Chatham, HMS Inflexible, and HMS Queen, along with wartime service in the Grand Fleet and at Gallipoli. Working near admirals and fleet staffs gave him practical familiarity with high command alongside his technical training.
