Green organized military craftsmen - stonecutters, masons, miners, carpenters, smiths, and other trades - under engineer officers so skilled work could follow the military chain of command. Their labor helped complete King's Bastion years earlier than civilian estimates and allowed damaged works to be rebuilt overnight under fire. The same engineering culture produced Gibraltar's first siege tunnels: an air vent blasted into the Rock proved large enough for a gun opening, creating high positions that could fire across and down onto attackers. The artificers were more than builders and became predecessors of the Royal Engineers.
