The wartime second Soldati series accepted lower engine output to improve reliability and service life. The discussion puts its practical speed closer to 32 knots than 35 and its output at roughly 44,000 to 45,000 shaft horsepower, below the earlier series. Machinery kept below its maximum output could be expected to last longer than machinery repeatedly worked at full power. This made the reduction in peak performance an operational tradeoff. Some ships also received German-made radar. Test speeds around 40 knots remained separate from the speeds available during ordinary wartime service.

Soldati machinery derating and service speed
Reducing engine output traded some Soldati speed for longer machinery life, while 40-knot tests remained a poor measure of wartime performance.
