Snowberry and guided-weapon target priorities

Snowberry's survival prompts an explanation based on target value, limited anti-aircraft reach, and German preference for larger escorts.

Notes

Snowberry joined Escort Group 5 in August 1943 after her major refit. The group encountered aircraft carrying the Henschel Hs 293 guided anti-ship weapon. Her small size probably made her a low-priority target compared with larger escorts, especially when the launch aircraft could remain beyond her effective anti-aircraft range. The comparison with using a modern hypersonic weapon against an offshore patrol vessel concerns target value and the availability of more worthwhile targets. Egret was sunk during these attacks, while several other ship and aircraft names in this account remain unclear.
