Oldenburg developed the Sachsen lineage beyond the form of a central-battery ironclad. Her mixed battery included eight 9.4-inch guns, four 15-centimetre weapons, and two 88-millimetre guns. Although conceived as an economical sortie corvette and part of Germany's deterrent against France, ships of this lineage formed the core of the German fleet. At thirteen years old, Oldenburg still represented Germany in the international naval demonstration opposing the Greek annexation of Crete in 1897. That deployment reveals more about her standing than a retrospective technical label alone.
